The Festes de la Merce is the largest annual festival in Barcelona which celebrates the day of the city’s patron saint.. The Virgin de la Merce. This festival takes place on the 24th of September with plenty of events starting on the 22nd. These events include a long parade of giant wooden figures (gegants) operated by people and huge (carrefoc) meaning fire runs where groups devils dance through the streets and spout fireworks.

The festival includes 400 different events such as sporting events, musical performances, art work, street entertainers, fantastic firework displays and plenty of partying most of which is free. One of the most eventful parts of the festival is the building of the largest human tower at the Placa de Sant.
